The announcement of the NEET 2024 results has caused a lot of controversies. Many candidates are asking for the exam to be held again. Although the National Testing Agency (NTA) has released a statement to address these issues, there are still several unresolved questions and a lack of transparency.
NEET 2024 Results Controversy Sparks Nationwide Debate
The controversy over the NEET 2024 results is at its peak. Initially, students and stakeholders raised concerns about errors in the results, but now the entire nation is discussing it. The National Testing Agency (NTA) released a statement addressing these queries, but it did not alleviate the suspicions.
The big question now is whether there will be a re-NEET in 2024. The NTA has reiterated that the NEET 2024 question paper was not leaked and that strict measures were taken to prevent any unfair practices during the exam.
Why is the NEET 2024 Result Controversial?
Here are the main reasons behind the NEET 2024 result controversy:
- 67 Candidates Scoring Perfect 720: An unusually high number of candidates scored a perfect 720.
- Impossible Scores: Some students received scores like 718 or 719, which are not possible according to the NEET marking scheme.
- Early Result Release: The results were released 10 days earlier than expected, coinciding with the Lok Sabha Election results.
- Question Paper Concerns: There were earlier allegations regarding the NEET 2024 question paper.
- Topper Anomalies: Multiple toppers came from the same exam center, raising suspicions.
Grace Marks and Time Loss Issues in NEET 2024
How Many Candidates Were Awarded Grace Marks in NEET 2024?
The National Testing Agency (NTA) announced that 1,563 students were awarded grace marks in NEET 2024. Out of these, 790 students passed because of the grace marks, while the rest either received negative marks or did not pass. NTA assured that awarding grace marks did not affect the overall NEET 2024 results.
Candidates Facing Time Loss Issues
Candidates from Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Chhattisgarh reported issues during the exam, such as loss of time, incorrect distribution of question papers, and in some cases, torn OMR sheets.
NEET 2024 Grace Marks Formula
The NTA has not disclosed the specific formula used for awarding grace marks. The marks varied for each candidate, based on factors such as the amount of time lost, the efficiency and average speed of the candidates, and other undisclosed criteria.
NTA’s Explanation on Grace Marks for NEET 2024
In response to several writ petitions filed by NEET 2024 candidates in the High Courts of Punjab & Haryana, Delhi, and Chhattisgarh, the National Testing Agency (NTA) decided to award grace marks to compensate for the loss of exam time at certain centers.
Investigation and Compensation
A Grievance Redressal Committee reviewed factual reports and CCTV footage to investigate these claims. After confirming the loss of exam time, the committee compensated the affected candidates based on their answering efficiency and the amount of time lost, using a formula established by the Supreme Court of India.
Range of Revised Marks
NTA stated, “Candidates were compensated for the loss of time, and their revised marks vary from -20 to 720. Among these, two candidates received scores of 718 and 719 due to compensatory marks. Analysis of the CCTV footage confirmed that the integrity of the examination was not compromised at these centers.”
NTA Decides Against Re-NEET 2024 for All Candidates
On June 8, 2024, the National Testing Agency (NTA) held a press conference to address concerns regarding the NEET 2024 results. The NTA confirmed that the overall integrity of the NEET UG exam is intact, and a re-exam will not be conducted for the 25 lakh students who participated. This decision was made after careful consideration to ensure the exam’s fairness and integrity. Re-exam might be for only 1563 candidates.
Review of Grace Marks
The NTA has formed a committee to review the grace marks awarded to 1,563 candidates. This committee will thoroughly investigate the circumstances under which these marks were given. Depending on the committee’s findings, the results of these students may be adjusted, or a re-exam may be held specifically for them.
Perfect Scores After Revision
The NTA clarified the high number of perfect scores this year, with 67 candidates scoring 720/720. It was found that 44 of these perfect scores resulted from a revision of one Physics answer key, where two options were accepted as correct.
High Number of Toppers from a Specific Centre
Regarding the unusually high number of NEET 2024 toppers from one exam center, Subodh Kumar Singh explained that this center had a higher number of candidates and a higher average quality of candidates, leading to multiple toppers from that location.
